HBO has confirmed three more castings for Season 2 of its Harry Potter series, adapting Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Rafe Spall will play Arthur Weasley, Molly Hewitt-Richards takes on Moaning Myrtle, and Jasper Ambrose joins as Colin Creevey. Between them, the three roles cover the Weasley household, the haunted bathroom on the second floor, and the newest and most enthusiastic member of Harry’s fan club, which is to say, a good chunk of what makes the second book tick.

Arthur Weasley: Rafe Spall

Rafe Spall becomes the first actor cast as Arthur Weasley, the last major member of the Weasley family left to fill after the children and Katherine Parkinson as Molly were announced during Season 1. Spall is the most established name in this round, with credits including Prometheus, The Big Short, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and the comedy Trying, and he arrives with a lighter comic register that fits a character defined as much by his fascination with Muggle plugs and batteries as by his work at the Ministry of Magic.

Chamber of Secrets is where Arthur properly steps forward: the Burrow, the flying Ford Anglia, the trip to Diagon Alley, and the confrontation with Lucius Malfoy in Flourish and Blotts all run through him. It also sets up the Weasley marriage as one of the book’s few warm, functioning adult relationships, which puts Spall and Parkinson in scenes together from the start. Mark Williams played the role across the films.

Moaning Myrtle: Molly Hewitt-Richards

Molly Hewitt-Richards will play Moaning Myrtle, the ghost haunting the girls’ bathroom where much of the second half of the book takes place. The casting continues the show’s pattern of moving closer to the characters’ ages on the page: Myrtle died as a Hogwarts student, but Shirley Henderson was in her late thirties when she played her in 2002 and again in Goblet of Fire, a choice that became one of the films’ more recognisable performances precisely because of the mismatch.

How the series handles her is one of the open questions of the season. Myrtle is a joke and a tragedy in the same scene: self-pitying, easily offended, and also a murdered child who has been stuck in a toilet for fifty years, and she is the one character who can point Harry and Ron toward the Chamber’s entrance.

Colin Creevey: Jasper Ambrose

Jasper Ambrose takes on Colin Creevey, the Muggle-born first-year who spends the book trailing Harry with a camera and asking for autographs. Colin is easy to file under comic relief, and he is funny, but he is also the second victim of the Chamber and the reason the school’s response escalates — his camera, and what happens to the film inside it, is one of the book’s better-placed details. Hugh Mitchell played him in the films.

Season 2, briefly

Season 2 adapts Chamber of Secrets and is in production at Leavesden Studios outside London. Previously announced additions include Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart, Lenny Rush as Dobby, Billy Barratt as the teenage Tom Riddle, and Bonnie Hill as Ginny Weasley, taking over from Season 1’s Gracie Cochrane. The returning core cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron, alongside John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, and Nick Frost as Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, and Hagrid.

Francesca Gardiner writes and executive produces the series, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films, also executive produce. Season 1, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, premieres on HBO on December 25.
