The Belgian cinematographer behind Andor and Lupin brings his cinematic mastery to the most anticipated TV series of the decade.
Wizarding World Direct can exclusively reveal that Christophe Nuyens has been tapped as the Director of Photography for the episodes directed by Benjamin Caron in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.
A world-class director
Benjamin Caron is an award-winning director whose credits include Andor, The Crown, Sherlock, and Wallander. He joins co-showrunner Mark Mylod, who is directing episodes 1 and 2, and Lucy Forbes, who is helming episodes 3 and 4, as the third confirmed director on Season 1. The specific episodes assigned to Caron have not been officially disclosed, but his involvement signals HBO’s commitment to bringing elite directorial talent to the project.
The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and consisting of eight episodes, is scheduled to premiere on HBO on 25 December 2026.
The cinematographer who paints with light
So who exactly is the man behind the lens for Caron’s episodes? Christophe Nuyens, SBC, is a Belgian cinematographer whose journey to international acclaim began unexpectedly: originally an electrician, it was during his time at film school that he truly found his calling. He started out as a camera assistant on music videos and documentaries before focusing primarily on TV dramas from 2009 onwards.
His connection to Belgian and Nordic influences is apparent in his stylistic choices, often embracing natural light and darker tones reminiscent of his cultural heritage. He draws inspiration from films like Apocalypse Now, No Country for Old Men, and Children of Men — works that harmonize technical brilliance with storytelling.
Lupin (Netflix, 2021)
Landing the role of Director of Photography on the pilot episode of Lupin was a pivotal opportunity for Nuyens. Working closely with director Louis Leterrier, he embraced the chance to craft an innovative visual language that would define the show’s character and mood, blending technical expertise with creative spontaneity, resulting in a unique storytelling approach that captivated audiences globally. The show became one of Netflix’s biggest international hits, and Nuyens’ work on it earned him an ASC Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in a limited series or pilot.
Andor Season 2 (Disney+, 2025)
Nuyens was responsible for creating the look of the first six episodes of Andor Season 2, a role that gave him a high degree of creative freedom to explore the different worlds Cassian Andor inhabits and contrast how people live across this expansive universe.
Determined to push the visual scope further than Season 1, he switched to larger-format lenses and a bigger sensor (closer to the ALEXA 65 used on Rogue One) essentially enlarging the cinematic scope of the show to near-IMAX proportions.
Walking through the iconic Pinewood Studios, Nuyens described the experience as “walking through history itself,” drawing inspiration from the craftsmanship of Rogue One cinematographer Greig Fraser to match the high standards of the Star Wars universe.
