Gracie Cochrane, who portrays Ginny Weasley in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will not be returning for Season 2 of the HBO series. The role will be recast.

The announcement came directly from Cochrane and her family, who shared a statement explaining the situation:

“Due to unforeseen circumstances Gracie has made the challenging decision to step away from her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after season one. Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience. Gracie is very excited about the opportunities her future holds.”

HBO followed up with their own response, keeping things warm and supportive:

“We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show. We wish Gracie and her family the best.”

A Sensitive Situation

The circumstances behind the departure remain vague — “unforeseen circumstances” doesn’t tell us much — but both sides appear to have handled this with care and mutual respect, which is reassuring. It’s worth remembering that all the young actors in this series were chosen from tens of thousands of submissions, so the weight of these roles is very real, even for the smallest parts in Season 1.

Ginny Weasley may not be a central character in Philosopher’s Stone, but her importance grows significantly as the story progresses — not least because of her future relationship with Harry himself. Whoever steps into the role for Season 2, which will adapt Chamber of Secrets, will have their work cut out for them, as Ginny plays a far more prominent part in that book.

Casting for the new Ginny has not yet been announced. I’ll keep you posted as soon as more information comes through. In the meantime, we wish Gracie all the best for whatever comes next.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max this Christmas.
