Fans of the Golden Trio, brace yourselves: Rupert Grint is trading the film set for the stage. Eighteen years after he last put on Ron Weasley’s jumper for the cameras, the actor is set to take on the character live, eight shows a week, in New York.

Ron Weasley Is Back

Grint will join the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Lyric Theatre for a 17-week engagement, running February 2 through May 30, 2027. Unlike the films, the play jumps forward in time: it picks up the story nearly two decades after Deathly Hallows, when Harry, Ron and Hermione are adults raising children of their own.

Anyone hoping to snag a seat should move fast. Registering on the official Cursed Child website gives access to a presale opening Tuesday, September 1 at 11am ET, a full day ahead of the general on-sale, which begins Wednesday, September 2 at 11am ET.

What Grint Is Saying About the Role

For Grint, stepping back into the part isn’t a simple nostalgia trip, he’s described it as a role that’s grown up alongside him. He explained:

“Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life. There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new.

He joins Tom Felton as the second actor from the films to star in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
