In a dramatic turn of events in Hollywood’s biggest media deal of 2026, Netflix has officially withdrawn from its agreement to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery.

Initially, Netflix had struck a deal to buy Warner Bros. Discovery’s content and streaming assets for approximately $82.7 billion, but Paramount Skydance subsequently raised its offer to purchase the entire Warner Bros. Discovery company for around $110 billion. A transaction expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, pending regulatory and shareholder approvals.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s board determined Paramount’s bid to be “superior” and under the terms of its merger agreement, Netflix was given the chance to match it: something it declined to do, saying the higher price “was no longer financially attractive”.

As part of the acquisition process, Paramount also paid Netflix a reported breakup fee of roughly $2.8 billion related to the terminated deal. Now, Paramount is poised to take control of Warner Bros. Discovery and its vast portfolio, including HARRY POTTER.

While this news spans the entire entertainment industry, one of the most significant implications for fans of the Wizarding World lies in what it could mean for HARRY POTTER and its upcoming adaptations.

A new chapter for the Wizarding World

The Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella has long been home to the HARRY POTTER film franchise, the Wizarding World catalog, and the highly anticipated live-action HARRY POTTER TV series currently in development for HBO Max/HBO.

Under the terms of the acquisition, HARRY POTTER, along with other major franchises like Game of Thrones and the DC Universe, becomes part of the expanded Paramount Skydance portfolio.

This change raises somes questions for the future of the Wizarding World:

✔️ Streaming strategy: Paramount may integrate HARRY POTTER content into its own streaming ecosystem, potentially combining HBO Max with Paramount+ or adjusting how the HARRY POTTER TV series is distributed.

✔️ Audience reach: A combined streaming platform strategy could broaden access to Wizarding World content globally, reaching audiences who may not have previously subscribed to HBO Max. Although, let’s be honest, Paramount+ is far from having the influence and audience of Netflix.

✔️ Franchise investment: With Paramount committing to invest in creative storytelling and competitive content production, there’s potential for strengthened support behind major IPs like HARRY POTTER, from series development to marketing strategy. Paramount promises 15 films a year for Warner Bros, which may revive the Wizarding World on the big screen, but let’s be cautious: words are sometimes far removed from reality.

However, it’s important to note that change on the corporate level doesn’t automatically alter the creative teams working on Wizarding World projects, especially those deeply engaged with the upcoming TV adaptation.

HBO Max and Paramount+ to merge into one single streaming platform

Update 02/03/26: David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance, says HBO will continue to have the necessary budget and independence.

However, Paramount+ and HBO Max will be merged into a single streaming platform following the acquisition. The HARRY POTTER TV series will therefore be available on Paramount+ (if the name remains unchanged).

“As we said, we do plan to put the two services together, which today gives us a little over 200 million direct to consumer subscribers. We think that really positions us to compete with the leaders in the space, At Paramount, by the middle of this year, we’ll have completed the consolidation of our three services under one unified stack, and you can see us taking a similar approach to this platform going forward.”
