HBO has announced three new cast members for its upcoming Harry Potter series. Jasper Talbot will play James Potter, Hannah Chinn will portray Lily Potter, and Harry Gilby joins the Wizarding World as Charlie Weasley. But what do these new additions mean for Season 1?

The casting news brings three important characters into the growing ensemble of HBO’s adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. While Harry’s parents are central to the entire story, Charlie Weasley is a more unexpected addition, particularly given his limited role in the first book.

Who Are the New Harry Potter Cast Members?

Jasper Talbot as James Potter

Jasper Talbot will portray James Potter, Harry’s father, who was killed by Lord Voldemort alongside Lily when Harry was still a baby.

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Talbot has built experience in theatre, with credits including Inter Alia at the National Theatre and The Line of Beauty at the Almeida Theatre. His screen work includes an appearance in Broadchurch.

James only appears in flashbacks or in the Mirror of Erised in the first book, but is obviously a very important character, as he is Harry’s father and goes on to reappear several times throughout the series. His friendship with Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew, as well as his complicated history with Severus Snape, could offer opportunities for the television series to explore his past in greater detail.

Hannah Chinn as Lily Potter

Hannah Chinn has been cast as Lily Potter, Harry’s mother, whose sacrifice saved her son and inadvertently led to Voldemort’s downfall.

Chinn’s screen credits include the medical drama Malpractice, the television drama The Trap and The Conjuring: Last Rites.

Lily’s love for Harry is one of the foundations of the entire Harry Potter saga. Her decision to protect her son gave him a magical protection that caused Voldemort’s killing curse to rebound.

Her relationship with James and her childhood friendship with Snape also play significant roles in the wider story. With a television format allowing more room for character development, fans may get a deeper look at Harry’s parents. However, HBO has yet to confirm how extensively they will appear in the first season.

Harry Gilby Joins as Charlie Weasley: Could We Finally See the Norbert Storyline?

Harry Gilby will portray Charlie Weasley, the second-oldest son of Arthur and Molly Weasley and the older brother of Percy, Fred, George, Ron and Ginny.

Gilby is known for playing young J.R.R. Tolkien in the 2019 biographical film Tolkien and Æthelstan in The Last Kingdom, a role he reprised in The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die. He has also appeared in productions including Just Charlie and Boarders.

Charlie is a former Gryffindor student who works with dragons in Romania. Even though he has never appeared in the original films, his role in the first book offers an intriguing opportunity for the HBO adaptation.

In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Hagrid secretly raises a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon named Norbert. When the dragon becomes too dangerous to keep at Hogwarts, Ron suggests sending it to Charlie, who arranges for friends to collect it.

Could the HBO series finally bring Charlie on screen during the Norbert storyline?

It’s certainly a possibility. In the book, Charlie helps organise the dragon’s removal but never visits Hogwarts himself. Casting an actor for the role could indicate that the series intends to expand this subplot or introduce Charlie in a new scene.

For now, however, his exact role remains unconfirmed.
