The beloved prankster is finally coming to screen and the casting couldn’t be more perfect.
After decades of Potterheads lamenting Peeves the Poltergeist‘s absence from the original film series, HBO has officially confirmed that the mischievous ghost will make his long-awaited live-action debut and the actor stepping into the role is a brilliant choice.
Peter Serafinowicz has been cast as Peeves the Poltergeist in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, Variety reports.
Who is Peter Serafinowicz?
If the name rings a bell, it should. Serafinowicz is a multi-talented British actor and comedian with an extraordinary range: from blockbuster villainy to beloved animation. Genre fans will recognise him as Denarian Saal in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and as the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. He most recently appeared in the 2025 live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, and TV viewers may know him as Edgar Covington in Parks and Recreation. His voice acting credits also include Big Daddy in both Sing films.
In short: this is a man who knows how to inhabit larger-than-life characters with wit, menace, and charm, exactly what Peeves demands.
Why Peeves matters so much
For readers of J.K. Rowling‘s books, Peeves is an institution. The cackling, rule-breaking poltergeist haunts the corridors of Hogwarts throughout all seven novels, causing chaos at every turn and delighting readers with his irreverent attitude. His complete absence from the original eight-film series remains one of the most discussed omissions in franchise history.
Tragically, Peeves was almost in the films. British comedy legend Rik Mayall filmed scenes for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone before being cut due to time constraints. In a bittersweet interview, Mayall recalled receiving a significant fee for his work, only to be called a month later and told he hadn’t made the final cut. He passed his opening night tickets on to his children, who hadn’t been told he was cut and came home raving about the “brilliant make-up,” convinced he had been playing Hagrid.
Mayall passed away in 2014. Serafinowicz stepping into the role feels, in many ways, like a moment of closure for fans who always believed Peeves deserved his place in the wizarding world on screen.
