My favorite book changed 3 times in my life. Younger, it was Prisoner of Azkaban. For a long time. When I did a re-read in my mid-twenties, Goblet of Fire became my favorite. Ths story, the action, the complexity, the score. It was so epic. But now, in my big 32 years old and after re-reading the series multiple times, I think my favorite and the best book overall is Half-Blood Prince. It’s a masterpiece on all point. The story, the characters, the climax, the themes, everything is perfect.

It’s funny to see how your opinion changed through the years

I read the books only once when I was much younger and my favorite was Deathly Hallows. I think it ends the story in a very beautiful and satisfying way. The atmosphere of this book is also so unique. Plus, it added a lot of nuances to some characters we thought we already knew.

Currently, I am reading all the books for the first time as an adult and I have just ended Order of the Phoenix. I love them all but my favorite one so far is Goblet of Fire for pretty much the same reasons as you. It is a great mix between the magic and the simplicity of the first half of the saga, and the complexity and dark tone of the second half.

I wonder if after finishing my re-reading, I will end up preferring Deathly Hallows again or if I’ll have another favorite.

Deathly Hallows was also my favorite, mainly because it was the only one of the books I was able to read before the films came out, so there was that element of surprise, and I remember not being able to put the book down, always thinking, ‘just one more chapter’.

But in the end, my favorite is Order of the Phoenix, because for me it’s the one that feels most like ‘Harry Potter’. There’s this very ‘school-like feeling’ that I like, more than in the others, and it introduces Luna, who becomes one of my favorite characters. There are lots of elements like that which I liked: the Ministry of Magic and its Department of Mysteries, Dumbledore’s Army, the Room of Requirement, the Thestrals, the Aurors against the Death Eaters, the prophecy… I know it’s a very long one and could have been shorter.

I love long books and, in fantasy genre, it can really help to enforce the immersion.
I don’t think Order of the Phoenix is too long. We enter the Ministry of Magic and have a deeper dive into the functioning of the wizards society.
It also have one of the best antagonist of the series.
This book brings a lot of interesting pieces of lore and some great characters developments. Reading it again as an adult made me realize even more how this book is amazing. Misinformation, corruption, resistance, trauma, dealing with strong emotions… and it ends with an epic battle!

I would not have it any shorter.
