Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic — HBO Gives Us an Exclusive Look Inside the Harry Potter Series, and We’re Already Obsessed

The official Harry Potter Instagram just dropped a bombshell: a behind-the-scenes documentary on the upcoming HBO series is streaming this Sunday, April 5. And the trailer alone? It’s already a goldmine.

What is Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic?

HBO officially announced today that Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic will debut on Sunday, April 5, at 8:00 p.m. in the UK (3:00 p.m. ET / 12:00 p.m. PT in the U.S.) on HBO Max, and will also air on HBO in the U.S. at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT that same evening.

This isn’t just a quick promo piece, this is a full dedicated special. The documentary offers an inside look at the epic scale and meticulous care behind the new series, told through the lens of the artists, craftspeople, and technicians bringing J.K. Rowling’s beloved books to life for a new generation. It chronicles the extensive process behind finding the new Harry, Ron, and Hermione, while also celebrating the awe-inspiring commitment to detail that has gone into building this extraordinary world.

Narrated by Nick Frost, who plays Hagrid in the series, the special features key cast members from the teachers’ table, including John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, and Paapa Essiedu. I’m talking Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Snape all in one room, sharing their experience on set. Yes, please.

The special features interviews with members of the casting, production design, costume design, and creature effects teams. In other words, this is the deep dive we’ve been desperately craving since the teaser trailer shook the internet last week.

As a reminder, the series itself, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on HBO globally on HBO Max on December 25, 2026.

Trailer breakdown: everything I spotted

Okay, fellow witches and wizards, let’s get into the real reason you’re here. The trailer for Finding Harry didn’t just tease the documentary. It dropped a flood of new footage from the series itself, and I’ve paused, rewound, and frame-by-framed it so you don’t have to. Here’s what I found:

🧙 Diagon Alley is absolutely stunning

The sets. The SETS. We’re getting our first proper look at Diagon Alley, and the level of detail is unlike anything we’ve seen before, even compared to the films and the studio tours. One shop in particular: Herbage & Seed, a brand new wizarding establishment that doesn’t appear in the films. The storefront is overflowing with enormous, otherworldly mushrooms spilling right out of the window display. It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and it feels like it was pulled straight from the pages of the books.

🦅 New House crests: Ravenclaw finally gets its eagle

Book fans, rejoice. The new official house logos for Ravenclaw and Slytherin have been revealed in the trailer, and they are gorgeous. Most notably: Ravenclaw’s crest now features an eagle, exactly as described in the books, rather than the raven used in the films. It’s a small change that will mean everything to those of us who’ve been waiting 25 years for this correction. The level of faithfulness to the source material here is a real statement of intent from the showrunners.

🧹 A new era for broomsticks

We get a brief but tantalizing glimpse at the new broomsticks. Speaking of which, the newly revealed poster shows Harry proudly holding his Nimbus 2000, and this is the first time we’ve ever seen the tip of the broom up close. It sports a beautiful embossed logo and comes in a rich, deep red. It’s elegant, it’s magical, and it already feels iconic.

🦉 Animatronics: an owl and a mystery creature

The creature effects team clearly means business. The trailer gives us two animatronic reveals. First: a stunning owl, with feather-level detail that looks utterly alive.

The second creature is more mysterious. Based on its appearance, I’m personally leaning toward it being a Dugbog, a swamp-dwelling beast from wizarding lore, but I’ll hold off on calling that one officially until we know more. Either way, the fact that they’re building practical animatronics at this level of quality tells you everything about how seriously this production is taking the magical world.

⚗️ The potions classroom

We get a precious few seconds inside what appears to be Professor Snape’s Potions classroom. Rows upon rows of mysterious flasks, bottles, and ingredients line every surface. The lighting is dark and moody, casting long shadows over shelves packed with detail. It feels ancient, it feels dangerous, and it feels real. This is not a set, this is a room.

If the trailer for Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic is any indication, this documentary is going to be essential viewing, not just as a marketing piece, but as a genuine celebration of craftsmanship. Every single frame of new series footage we’ve seen points to a production that is swinging for the fences, built by people who genuinely love these books.

The sets are extraordinary. The costumes look faithful. The creature work is already blowing us away. And the fact that Ravenclaw finally has its eagle? A victory for book purists everywhere.

Don’t miss Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, streaming this Sunday, April 5, on HBO Max.
