In a recent interview with The Times of London, HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that the writing team is already hard at work on Season 2 of the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. While this isn’t entirely breaking news (we’ve known for a while that early development was underway) it’s a reassuring reminder that HBO is committed to keeping the momentum going.
No “huge gap” between seasons
Bloys was clear about the network’s priorities: avoiding lengthy breaks between seasons, especially given the young cast.
“Our goal is to not have a huge gap, you know, especially because the kids are growing. It’s not going to be an annual; the show is too big and too massive. But … they’re writing the season two now.”
This makes perfect sense. With Dominic McLaughlin (Harry), Alastair Stout (Ron), and Arabella Stanton (Hermione) set to grow alongside their characters, keeping a reasonable pace will be essential to maintaining the magic and the continuity.
A faithful journey through all seven books
As a reminder, HBO’s ambitious plan is to adapt each of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels as its own season. Season 1, based on The Philosopher’s Stone (or The Sorcerer’s Stone for our American friends), has already given us a tantalizing trailer featuring beloved moments: the Hogwarts letter, Harry and Ron’s first meeting on the train, and glimpses of iconic characters like Dumbledore, Snape, and the Sorting Hat.
The stellar cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
So while today’s news isn’t exactly a bombshell, it’s a welcome sign that HBO understands what’s at stake. The Wizarding World deserves a thoughtful, well-paced adaptation and it sounds like that’s exactly what we’re going to get.
